Emotional Medicine

Are you taking the right stuff?

Not every injury or illness requires popping pills. But, some simply do.

Fevers often need a nudge with acetaminophen.

Infections usually call for antibiotics.

Some people prefer herbal tinctures and home remedies.

Regardless of the means of dealing with them, serious sicknesses and wounds rarely go ignored.

Except, that is, for the ones in our hearts.

Diagnosis is critical, and not always something we can do ourselves. We often need others — spouses, parents, children, friends, counselors, therapists, or total strangers — to help us discover what is causing the pain.

But then it’s up to us. Filling the script, taking the tonic, and carving out the quiet is our responsibility. In the realm of emotional healing, we also need to help diagnose our cure.

What brings healing to my heart?

Alone time to journal? Friend time to laugh? Taking longs walks? Crying on a trusted shoulder? Lighting candles or stringing up fairy lamps? Decluttering? Working out? Driving down the highway with the windows down and the music blasting?

Only you can answer that.

Whatever it is, you need to make it a priority.

What we often term ‘self-care’ is simply paying attention to what our aching souls need in order to heal.

Look for, and make room for, the things that wash away the stains of pain on your soul.

Good medicines are the things that bring us hope, laughter, and concrete peace.

These medicines are not things that merely dull or deaden the pain — that’s hiding, not healing, and self-sabotage, not self-care.

Covering up pain is different than cleansing the wound, and only one of them brings healing.

What’s your medicine? Do you know the answer? Find out.

There are no quick fixes or miracle drugs in this territory of soul and spirit.

Most likely, your prescription will have these directions on the label: “Take often, and mix with a heaping dose of Time. Continue until well.”

Here’s to healing. ❤
